Session 3 - The Temple of the Elk

“Once the bear’s hug has got you, it is apt to be for keeps.”

5 Pharast through 29 Pharast

Having returned to Olaf’s Trading Post, the players spoke with Jonas Kavken and Kelvin Garess.

The next day the players resumed their exploration of the Green Belt. As well as the locations mentioned below, the players also explored B19, B18, A18, A17, A16, A15, B16, C16, C15, and D15.

Hex C19 – In search of the Moon Radish patch, the players encountered a group of Kobolds. Rather than kill the creatures, the players negotiated with them to hand over some of their Moon Radishes in exchange for not telling any other Kobolds about this location. They also learned that the reason Kobolds have been acting up recently was due to them being at war with the Mites. The Mites have stolen their scared statue and without it they will “turn yellow and die.”

Hex C18 – Solanthus discovered a strange nest that the party think belongs to the Faerie Dragon that has played tricks on them during their explorations.

Hex B17 – A large number of bear traps were found in this location. Jake managed to get caught in two during their exploration but the rest of the party was able to free him and tend to his injuries.

Hex B15 – The players discovered the cairn of a Tiger Lords barbarian. While the rest of the group decided to not disturb the grave, Solanthus decided to shift the rocks in search of anything of value. He found a ring made of green wood carved with an image of an eel and a frog entwined.

Hex C17 – The players found a dead trapper caught in his own dead-fall trap. Examination of the trap discovered that the ropes that held the logs in place had been chewed through. The players speculated that the creature responsible may have been the Faire Dragon.

Hex D16 – A hot spring proved too tempting for Jake, who dived straight in. Unfortunately he had not noticed the creature that lived in the pond, a giant frog. The rest of the party arrived in time to rescue Jake who had been swallowed whole.

Hex D17 – The players managed to find the Temple of the Elk where they fought and defeated a crazed grizzly bear. Upon being struck down, the bear briefly turned into a very elderly man before turning to dust. With the bear dead, the once stagnant pool magically cleansed itself.

Session 2 - Peril on the Plains

The party interrogated the two bandit prisoners to learn what they knew about the other bandits in the region. Unwilling to believe they were redeemable, Brok The Marked gave one of them a fighting chance to escape and challenged him to a trial by combat. Hank Brydon‘s injuries prevented him from being offered the same so Solanthus D’Naariel killed him rather than leave him alone with the Levetons.

Yuri Dragomir, a warlock from the nearby country of Ustalav, arrived at the Trading Post and explained he had also been chartered to explore the Greenbelt region.

  • Yuri had intended to join the group during the meeting in Restov, but had slept late after being awoken in the middle of the night by a Varisian Harrower named Zellara. Zellara explained that the bandits of the Greenbelt had attacked and killed her son. She said that the bandits had taken something important from her and she wanted Yuri to take it back for her. When questioned about what they had taken, Zellara said Yuri would know it when he saw it.

Hex B20
Beginning their exploration of the Greenbelt, the party headed East, searching for the missing alchemist, Brandon. They succeeded in finding his hut and learned that Brandon had recently been injured after stepping in a bear trap. Forced to amputate his leg to escape, he had somehow managed to make his way back to his hut but was now unable to gather the components he needs to craft potions. The party agreed to search for the most common ingredients he needs.

  • Brandon explained that the bear trap that injured him was set by Borys Orloff, a callous trapper who neglects to mark his traps to allow humans to know they are there. Brandon pointed out on the map where his accident occurred (Hex B15).
  • He also told the group the story of how he came to lose his little finger. He explained how his brother had cut off his finger before killing their mother. Brandon believed that he had fled the city guard and was hiding somewhere in the southern part of the Greenbelt. How much truth there is to this story is unknown as Brandon could not remember his brother’s name, what he looked like and even claimed that his brother was living in a tree. He did recall something about a locket belonging to their mother however.
  • Prior to finding Brandon’s hut, the players encountered a group of diminutive fae creatures Brandon identified as being mites. He explained that a large group lived in a tree to the south (Hex E20).

The party continued their exploration of the Greenbelt
Hex B21 – The party found a number of giant centipede nests. They also discovered evidence that the mites had been here recently and had taken a number of eggs
Hex C21 – Solanthus was attacked by a tatzlwyrm but Brok was able to kill it before it could inflict serious damage. Cutting off the beast’s head the party took it with them to give to Olaf
Hex C20 – A party came across a large area of scattered bones from a variety of creatures, including humans. Raffiq Ibn Ghazi was attacked by a giant trapdoor spider, but managed to avoid being bitten by the poisonous creature

  • Yuri was unable to resist the temptation of exploring the spider’s lair. He found the body of a long dead bandit with a silver stag amulet and a crude map indicating some sort of stash hidden beneath a claw-shaped tree on a hill.
  • The party’s sleep was disturbed by the arrival of a Faerie Dragon who began to play tricks on the group, including sending most of them to sleep. Yuri managed to resist the spell and complimented the Faerie Dragon on his trickery which seemed to placate the creature.

Returning to the Trading Post on the eve of 5th Pharast, the players learned that a group of guards led by Kelvin Garess had arrived at the Trading Post the same day they set off. Olaf also explained that a man named Jonas Kavken had arrived and was looking for a temple dedicated to Erastil that was hidden in the forests.

The Sword Lords of Restov made it known that they were searching for adventurers to explore the regions south of Brevoy. The players were assigned the region known as the Greenbelt by Mayor Joseph Solamnus and told to explore and map the area. They were also warned that someone calling himself the Stag Lord had organised the bandits in the region and they should try to deal with them as well.

  • Jack (Jakob) Varn the group’s Ranger, met up with his distant cousin, Magnus Varn, who had been put in charge of exploring the Nomen Heights.
  • The area around the Hooktongue Slough was assigned to Hannis Drelev.
  • It was unclear who had been assigned the area around the Glenebon Uplands.

The players arrived at Olaf’s Trading Post (Hex B19), run by Olaf Leveton and his wife Stephana Leveton. To the player’s surprise, it seemed that they were expected, but it soon became clear that the Leveton’s had requested aid from Restov which had never arrived. The players agreed to help the Levetons with the bandit problem they were experiencing.

  • The bandits had first arrived three months ago and had threatened the pair. They were led by a hooded man and a woman wielding dual hand axes. The woman had threatened to cut off Olaf’s hand and took Stephana’s wedding ring as the price for sparing him.
  • On subsequent visits to the trading post, the bandits arrived in fewer numbers, and were only led by the hooded man.

The players set an ambush for the bandits and succeeded in defeating the whole group without any injuries. Four of the bandits died during the battle, but one of the bandits and the hooded man, a bandit name Hank Brydon, were captured alive. Under threat of death, Hank revealed the location of the bandit camp, approximately 24 miles south of Olaf’s Trading Post (Hex D18). Raffiq Ibn Ghazi has offered the bandits the chance to redeem themselves rather than meet a bloody end at the hands of the rest of the party. It remains to be seen if they will take him up on this offer.

As the players prepare to set off into the wilderness in search of the bandit’s camp, Olaf has requested that they try to recover Stephana’s wedding ring. He also drew their attention to a number of other outstanding requests on the Trading Post notice board. Olaf did mention an alchemist by the name of Brandon who lived in a hut about 12 miles east of the Trading Post (Hex B20). He noted that he used to drop by frequently, but he hasn’t seen him in a little while.
